MODULE 1: WHY BUSINESS WRITING MATTERS
· Real-life consequences of unclear writing. Includes the $10M Canadian comma case and MMDA NCAP suspension due to confusing language.
· Impact on contracts, trust, brand image, and workplace productivity.
· Shifting from “grammar-focused” to “results-focused” writing.
MODULE 2: PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE BUSINESS WRITING
· Clarity, Purpose, Tone, and Brevity – the four pillars of effective communication.
· Audience-centered writing: focusing on what the reader needs to know, not just what you want to say.
· Formatting for quick reading: bullet points, headings, short paragraphs.
MODULE 3: COMMON PITFALLS & BEST PRACTICES
· Top mistakes: burying the main point, passive voice, jargon overload, and “wall of text” writing.
· BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) and SCQA (Situation–Complication–Question–Answer) frameworks for structuring messages.
· Practical tips to improve readability and avoid misinterpretation.
MODULE 4: INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES & CASE STUDIES
· Worst Email Ever exercise – rewrite a poorly written sample into a clear, concise version.
· “Clear or Confusing?” group quiz – vote on better sentence choices and explain why.
· Small group case analysis of ambiguous or poorly written notices.
MODULE 5: ACTION PLANNING & APPLICATION
· Participants identify three changes they will make to their writing immediately.
· Using AI and writing tools (Grammarly, Hemingway, ChatGPT) responsibly without losing human judgment.
· Summary of key takeaways and opportunities for deeper training in intermediate and technical writing.
